Sam Penny, Author of
Memphis 7.9, At The Bookshelf on May 27 To Meet Public of
McPherson, KS
Penny to sign his
novel about what happens when a
magnitude 7.9 earthquake strikes near Memphis?
Memphis, Tennessee - Sam Penny,
author and lecturer, announced this week that he will visit The
Bookshelf bookstore at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, to introduce
his novel Memphis 7.9 to the book readers in McPherson, KS. The
Bookshelf, located at 204 North Main Street will feature the
book on its shelves.
Penny noted, "Though this
book tells of an earthquake that happens 450 miles away from
McPherson, no one in this town will miss the almost two minutes
of hard shaking that results from an earthquake of magnitude
7.9 on the New Madrid Fault. More importantly, the impact of
such a disaster upon the economy of the entire United States
will have profound effects even in central Kansas."
Linda Crick, owner of The Bookshelf,
expressed her interest in Memphis 7.9. "I met Mr. Penny
a year ago as he was completing his book. It sounded like a great
book to bring to McPherson."
The story of Memphis 7.9 focuses
on how some citizens of Memphis have prepared for a major earthquake
on the New Madrid Fault Zone, just 45 miles west, and what happens
to the Mississippi River valley during the first six hours immediately
following a great earthquake of magnitude 7.9. A series of three
major earthquakes of even greater magnitude tore apart the same
region in 1811 and 1812.
Penny explains, "I began
my book when I explored the New Madrid Fault in the central United
States. I was appalled when I saw the level of preparedness of
Memphis and talked with the locals. I felt the story of the fate
that awaited them should be told. The basis for my book is hard
science, but I have told of what will happen through the eyes
of people who would be there, a genre I call Reality Fiction."
Memphis 7.9 is Book 1 of a four-part
project, The 7.9 Scenario, which tells of effects on the rivers
and attempts of the United States to recover from the worst disaster
that ever struck this land. Other books in the series are scheduled
for publication in the next three years. |
